The Upper Volta flag, 1959–1984
The flag stocked here is the historical flag of the Republic of Upper Volta. It was adopted on 9 December 1959, shortly before independence from France in 1960, and is a horizontal tricolour of three equal bands: black at the top, white in the middle and red at the bottom. The three colours are taken from the names of the three main branches of the Volta River, the Black Volta, the White Volta and the Red Volta, which rise in the country and flow south into Ghana. On 4 August 1984 the country was renamed Burkina Faso and a new flag of red and green with a gold star replaced the tricolour, so the Upper Volta flag is now a historical design. Our Upper Volta flag reproduces the tricolour in the original proportions.
Collectors, history and Burkinabé heritage
The Upper Volta flag is bought by collectors of former national flags, by teachers explaining how African states changed names and flags after independence, by families with roots in the country who remember the old flag, and by productions set in the 1960s and 1970s. Its simple stripes also make it easy to identify in a display alongside other historical flags.
Sizes, grades and related flags
The Upper Volta flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, from £7.99, in Flagtex (printed lightweight woven polyester with eyelets) or DuraFlag, a heavier knitted Upper Volta flag with double-stitched hems and clips or rope and toggle.
