The Somaliland flag: design and dates

The Somaliland flag has been in use since 14 October 1996. It has three equal horizontal bands of green, white and red. Written across the green band in white Arabic script is the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, and at the centre of the white band is a black five-pointed star. Our Somaliland flag prints the Arabic script clearly and in the correct reading direction, with the star centred, and it is the same design used on our bunting, hand flags and table flags.

Community events across Britain

Britain has long-established communities with roots in Somaliland, among the oldest in Cardiff’s Butetown and in Sheffield, alongside large communities in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester and Liverpool. The flag is used at weddings, community festivals, football tournaments, graduation parties and family celebrations, and businesses and community centres fly it at their events.
