The Montenegrin flag: red, gold and the eagle

Montenegro’s flag is a red field edged with a gold border and charged with the national arms: a gold double-headed eagle crowned, holding a sceptre and an orb, with a blue shield on its breast bearing a gold lion passant on a green base. The eagle descends from the Byzantine emblem used by the Crnojević dynasty and by the prince-bishops of Cetinje, and the lion on the shield is the symbol of the Petrović-Njegoš house that ruled the principality and kingdom until 1918. The present flag was adopted on 13 July 2004, replacing the plain red-blue-white tricolour used during the Yugoslav decades, and it kept its place unchanged when Montenegro restored its independence in 2006. 13 July, 21 May and a nation of water polo

Statehood Day on 13 July marks both the recognition of Montenegro at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and the 1941 uprising, and Independence Day on 21 May remembers the 2006 referendum; both bring the red and gold out across Podgorica, Cetinje and the Bay of Kotor. The flag is best known in Britain through sport: Montenegro’s water polo team is one of the strongest in the world, the handball and basketball sides fill arenas, and the footballers have twice met England at Wembley, including the 7-0 of November 2019 that was England’s 1,000th international. The Montenegrin community in Britain is small, mostly in London, and the flag is more often bought by Adriatic holidaymakers, Balkan restaurants, Orthodox parishes and school projects on the former Yugoslavia. Montenegro bunting
