The North Macedonia flag: a golden sun on red

The flag of North Macedonia is a red field with a golden-yellow sun whose eight rays broaden out to the edges of the flag, a design adopted on 5 October 1995. Red and yellow have been the Macedonian colours since the flag of the Socialist Republic within Yugoslavia, and the sun picks up the line of the national anthem about the new sun of freedom rising. From independence in 1991 until 1995 the country flew a different sun, the sixteen-ray Vergina Sun on red, which was replaced after the 1995 interim accord with Greece; that earlier design remains popular with collectors and the diaspora and we stock it as the Macedonia 1992–1995 flag. The country changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia in February 2019 under the Prespa Agreement, but the flag was untouched. Our North Macedonia flag is printed with the rays running to the corners and edges in the correct proportions, so the sun fills the flag as it should.

Independence Day, Ilinden and the Red Lynxes

Independence Day on 8 September marks the 1991 referendum, and Ilinden on 2 August recalls the uprising of 1903 and the 1944 assembly that founded the modern republic; both bring flags onto balconies in Skopje, Bitola and Ohrid. Easter, Christmas on 7 January and the Galičnik wedding in July are the other big flag weekends. The national football team, the Red Lynxes, reached their first major tournament at Euro 2020, when Goran Pandev scored their opening goal against Austria, and the handball team, led for years by Kiril Lazarov, is a fixture at European and World Championships. Basketball fans remember the run to fourth at EuroBasket 2011. Britain has Macedonian communities in London, Birmingham and Manchester, with Orthodox church festivals, a London Independence Day gathering organised with the embassy, and supporters who follow the national team to Euro and Nations League qualifiers with the sun flag.

Sizes, grades and fittings

For the current flag, the 5ft x 3ft is the size for a pole, a club wall or a church hall, the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a stall, the 8ft x 5ft for a stage or a tall mast and the 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor use and short spells outside; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a flagpole all season, and it can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle. The 1992–1995 flag is a 5ft x 3ft in Flagtex, with DuraFlag versions running from a 20x12in roped flag up to 8ft x 5ft.

Macedonia bunting

Macedonia bunting is a run of rectangular red pennants, each with the eight-ray sun, on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres is right for a doorway, a buffet or a classroom display for 8 September; nine metres dresses a church hall, a restaurant or a marquee for a wedding or a saint’s day. The pennants are printed on both sides in polyester and can stay out in a shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Macedonia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football qualifiers, handball nights and Independence Day picnics.
