The Panama flag: quarters and stars

The flag of Panama is divided into four quarters: white with a blue five-pointed star at the upper hoist, plain red at the upper fly, plain blue at the lower hoist and white with a red star at the lower fly. It was designed in 1903 by Manuel Amador Guerrero, the first president, and sewn by his wife María Ossa de Amador, and was raised on 3 November 1903 when Panama separated from Colombia. The blue and red were the colours of the Conservative and Liberal parties, set side by side to show that the new country would be governed by both in peace, the white is that peace, the blue star stands for purity and honesty and the red star for authority and law. Our Panama flag places the blue star top left and the red star bottom right, which is the arrangement most often got wrong on cheap copies.

November patriotic days, the Canal and La Marea Roja

Panama has a whole month of fiestas patrias in November: Separation Day on 3 November, Flag Day on 4 November, Colón Day on 5 November, the Uprising in Los Santos on 10 November and Independence from Spain on 28 November, with school marching bands parading the flag through every town. In football, La Marea Roja reached its first World Cup in 2018 in Russia, where it famously scored against England in Nizhny Novgorod. Baseball is the other great passion, with Mariano Rivera, the first player elected unanimously to the Hall of Fame, and Rod Carew among its stars, and boxing has Roberto Durán, Hands of Stone. In Britain the flag is bought by the small Panamanian community, by Latin festivals in London, by shipping companies, because Panama runs one of the largest ship registries in the world, and by schools and engineers fascinated by the Canal.
