The Nicaraguan flag: blue, white and the five volcanoes

Nicaragua flies three horizontal bands of blue, white and blue with the national coat of arms in the centre: a triangle holding five volcanoes rising from the sea, a red Phrygian cap of liberty on a staff with rays of light, and a rainbow, all ringed by the words República de Nicaragua and América Central. The blue-white-blue pattern goes back to the United Provinces of Central America of 1823, and the blue bands are the Pacific and the Caribbean on either side of the isthmus, with the white the land between them and the purity of the nation. The five volcanoes are the five founding states of the old federation, and the triangle stands for equality. The present design was set in 1908 and confirmed by law in 1971. Fiestas Patrias, Purísima and Nicaraguan sport

September is the flag month: the Battle of San Jacinto is remembered on 14 September and Independence Day, shared with the rest of Central America, falls on 15 September, when the Antorcha de la Libertad torch is carried through the region and school bands parade with the blue and white. La Purísima on 7 December and La Gritería, with altars to the Virgin and singing in the streets, are the other great nights for the flag. Baseball, not football, is the national sport, and Nicaraguan pitchers from Dennis Martínez, who threw a perfect game in 1991, to Erasmo Ramírez have played in the major leagues; boxing has produced Alexis Argüello and Román “Chocolatito” González, a four-weight world champion. In Britain the community is small and spread through London, where Central American independence days are celebrated together each September at Latin American festivals, and the flag is also asked for by volunteers and church groups returning from projects in León, Granada and Matagalpa.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Buy the 5ft x 3ft for a pole, a restaurant or a stage at a Latin festival; the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a stall; the 8ft x 5ft for a backdrop or a large mast; and the 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex, the printed woven polyester, is for inside and short outdoor spells; DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems, is for a mast all season long. Nicaragua bunting

Nicaragua bunting is a run of blue-white-blue rectangular pennants, each with the arms, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length goes over a door, a stall or a classroom wall for 15 September; a 9m length dresses a church hall, a dance floor or a marquee for La Purísima. Pennants are double-sided printed polyester and can stay up through a drizzle.

Hand flags and table flags

Nicaragua hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades, baseball games and festivals. The Nicaragua table flag is a 6x4in desk flag with a base for an office or a charity desk, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a top table.
