The Slovak flag: the tricolour and the double cross
Slovakia’s flag is a horizontal tricolour of white, blue and red, the pan-Slavic colours it shares with Russia, Slovenia and Serbia, with the national coat of arms set towards the hoist: a red shield with a white double cross, the patriarchal cross of Saints Cyril and Methodius, rising from the middle peak of three blue hills, Tatra, Fatra and Mátra. The plain tricolour was adopted by Slovak patriots in 1848, and the arms were added when the flag of the independent republic was set out on 1 September 1992, the date now kept as Constitution Day, a few months before Czechoslovakia separated on 1 January 1993. The arms sit in the hoist half so that the flag is told apart from Russia’s and Slovenia’s at a glance. Constitution Day, hockey and the Slovak community
Constitution Day on 1 September and the Day of the Establishment of the Republic on 1 January are the national flag days, with Slovak National Uprising Day on 29 August alongside them. The Slovak community in Britain, with centres in London, Peterborough, Sheffield, Bradford and Glasgow, marks them with community dinners, folk evenings and the Slovak Catholic mission’s feasts, and Slovak shops and restaurants keep the flag up all year. Ice hockey is where the flag is seen most, for the national team at the World Championships and for Slovak players in the NHL and across Europe, and it also follows Peter Sagan’s cycling fans, Petra Vlhová’s skiing, the national football team and the Slovak folk ensembles that tour Britain each summer.
Picking a size
A 5ft x 3ft is the size for a pole, a balcony or a bar wall; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, a short pole or a desk wall; an 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed pole or a hall backdrop; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole.
