The Kiribati flag: frigatebird, sun and sea

Kiribati's flag is red in the upper half, with a gold frigatebird flying above a gold rising sun. The lower half is made of wavy horizontal bands of blue and white representing the Pacific Ocean. The frigatebird stands for power, freedom and the islanders' seafaring skill, and the sun with its seventeen rays for the islands and the tropics. The design is based on the coat of arms granted to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony in 1937, and it became the national flag at independence from Britain on 12 July 1979. First to see the new year, and Independence Day

Kiribati is spread across three island groups over a vast stretch of ocean, and its Line Islands sit in the furthest-ahead time zone on Earth, so they are among the first places to welcome each new year. Independence Day on 12 July is celebrated with canoe races, dancing and sport. Kiribati is also known for its low-lying atolls, which make it a symbol in debates on rising sea levels. In Britain the flag is popular with flag collectors, Pacific-themed events and schools studying climate change.
