The American Samoa flag: eagle, war club and fly whisk
American Samoa adopted its flag on 17 April 1960, sixty years to the day after the Stars and Stripes was first raised at Pago Pago. A white-edged red triangle runs from the fly to a point at the hoist, with blue triangles above and below it. Across the red flies a bald eagle holding two Samoan objects in its talons: the uatogi, a carved war club that stands for the power of government, and the fue, a fly whisk that stands for the wisdom of the chiefs. The red, white and blue are the colours the territory shares with both the United States and Samoa. On our American Samoa flag the eagle, club and whisk stay crisp from the smallest size to the largest.
Flag Day, football and Pacific gatherings
Flag Day on 17 April is the territory’s biggest holiday, with fautasi longboat races, siva dancing and church services. American Samoa is known for sending a remarkable number of players to American football, and its families are closely linked to neighbouring Samoa, so this flag appears at Pacific Islands festivals, rugby sevens weekends and university cultural nights around the UK.
American Samoa flag sizes and grades
Sizes run 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. For an American Samoa flag that comes out for events, Flagtex (printed lightweight woven polyester with brass eyelets) is ideal; for one flying every day, DuraFlag is a heavier knitted cloth with double-stitched hems, available with clips or rope and toggle.
Hand flags, table flags and related flags
The American Samoa hand flag is a 9x6in flag on a wooden stick at £5.99, and the American Samoa table flag is 6x4in on a stand from £1.98. The national flag of the United States is with our USA flags, and the independent islands to the west are under Samoa flags.
