The Azerbaijan flag: three bands, a crescent and an eight-pointed star

The flag of Azerbaijan is a horizontal tricolour of sky blue, red and green with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star in the centre of the red band. It was first adopted on 9 November 1918 by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the short-lived first republic, and restored on 5 February 1991 shortly before the country regained its independence from the Soviet Union. Blue is explained as the Turkic heritage of the Azerbaijani people, red as progress and modern society, and green as Islam; the crescent is a traditional emblem of the region and the eight points of the star are most often said to stand for the eight branches of the Turkic peoples. A 162-metre flagpole flying the tricolour over Baku Bay was briefly the tallest in the world when it was raised in 2010. Flag Day, Novruz and the Baku Grand Prix

National Flag Day on 9 November and Independence Day on 18 October are the state occasions, with Republic Day on 28 May recalling the 1918 declaration, and Novruz, the spring new year around 20 March, is the family festival when the colours are out in homes and at bonfires. The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku street circuit is the event most British fans know, with the tricolour along the seafront and the old city walls, and Qarabağ FK have carried the flag into the Champions League and Europa League group stages against English clubs. Baku has also hosted Eurovision in 2012, the European Games in 2015 and matches at Euro 2020, and Azerbaijani wrestlers, judoka and chess players are regulars on the podium. In the UK the Azerbaijani community in London marks Novruz and Flag Day with concerts and receptions, and the flag appears at Turkic cultural festivals and the embassy in Kensington.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft suits a flagpole, a cultural centre wall or a restaurant; a 3ft x 2ft a window, an office or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft a stage backdrop or a tall fixed pole; and a 20x12in a car or a hand pole at the circuit. Choose Flagtex, the printed woven polyester, for indoor and short-term outdoor use, or DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges, when the flag is going to stay up through wind and rain. Both grades come with a sewn header and brass eyelets; clips or rope and toggle are available on the DuraFlag.

Azerbaijan bunting

Azerbaijan bunting is a string of rectangular tricolour pennants, each with the crescent and star, in 3m and 9m lengths. Use 3m across a doorway or along a Novruz table with the samani and painted eggs; use 9m down a hall, around a marquee or along the front of a stand. The polyester pennants are printed both sides and are weatherproof.

Hand flags and table flags

Azerbaijan hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for the Grand Prix grandstands, football and Flag Day events. The Azerbaijan table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a trade stand, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in is for a reception desk or a conference table.
