The Kyrgyzstan flag: forty rays and the tunduk

Kyrgyzstan's flag is a red field with a yellow sun at the centre. The sun has forty rays, one for each of the forty tribes united by the legendary hero Manas, whose epic poem is one of the longest in the world. Inside the sun is the tunduk, the crossed wooden crown at the top of a traditional yurt, a symbol of home, family and the unity of the people. Red is said to recall the banner of Manas. The flag was adopted in 1992, the year after independence from the Soviet Union. Our Kyrgyzstan flag keeps the gold sun bright against the deep red.

Independence Day, mountains and the World Nomad Games

Independence Day on 31 August marks the declaration of 1991. Mountains cover most of the country, from the Tian Shan to the Pamir, and Issyk-Kul, one of the largest alpine lakes in the world, never freezes. Kyrgyzstan hosted the first World Nomad Games in 2014, with horseback sports such as kok-boru. In Britain the flag is flown by Kyrgyz students, trekkers back from the Tian Shan and visitors to Central Asian festivals.
