The Tanzanian flag: two flags joined by a diagonal

Tanzania’s flag is divided diagonally by a black band edged in yellow running from the bottom of the hoist to the top of the fly, with a green triangle above and a blue triangle below. It was created on 30 June 1964 by merging the flags of the two states that had united that April: Tanganyika’s green, black and green horizontal flag with thin yellow stripes, and Zanzibar’s blue, black and green. Green is the land and its agriculture, blue the Indian Ocean and the great lakes, black the people, and the thin yellow fimbriations the mineral wealth of the mainland. The proportions are 2:3. Because the diagonal runs upwards from the hoist, the flag is easy to hang the wrong way round, and our Tanzania flag is finished with the header on the correct edge so that the green triangle sits at the top against the pole.

Union Day, 9 December and the Taifa Stars

Union Day on 26 April celebrates the 1964 union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Independence Day on 9 December recalls Tanganyika’s independence in 1961, and 12 January is Zanzibar Revolution Day; Saba Saba on 7 July, the trade fair in Dar es Salaam, and Nane Nane, the farmers’ day on 8 August, complete the flag calendar. Tanzanians in Britain are a well-established community, with Swahili churches and mosques in London, Manchester and Reading, a Tanzania Day in the summer and strong links through Kilimanjaro climbs, Serengeti safaris and Zanzibar holidays that bring the flag back in many a suitcase. In sport the flag flies for the Taifa Stars, who reached the Africa Cup of Nations again in 2024 and 2025, for the fierce Dar es Salaam derby between Simba and Young Africans, for the marathoners who have run London and Boston, and for the Kilimanjaro Marathon each February.

Choosing a Tanzania flag

The Tanzania flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is the economical printed woven polyester for a church hall, a classroom or a tour operator’s stand; DuraFlag is the heavy knitted polyester with double-stitched hems for a pole flown the year round. 5ft x 3ft is the garden pole and balcony size, 3ft x 2ft fits a wall bracket or a car window, 8ft x 5ft is for a stage or a 20ft mast, and 20x12in sits on a hand pole or a vehicle. Each has a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or a rope and toggle.

Tanzania bunting

Tanzania bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the diagonal flag and sewn to a tape. 3m frames a doorway or a buffet; 9m goes round a hall, a garden or an exhibition stand for Union Day or Independence Day. The polyester pennants are weatherproof and lengths tie end to end, and plain green, blue, black and yellow strings from the bunting range fill out a scheme.

Hand flags and table flags

Tanzania hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the football, a parade or a school assembly.
