The Midway Islands flag and its albatross

Midway Atoll has no official flag of its own; the design stocked here is the locally used Midway flag. It is divided horizontally into a deep blue upper band and a lighter blue lower band, separated by a thin white line like a horizon, with a white albatross gliding across the middle. The bird is the Laysan albatross, known to generations of Midway residents as the gooney bird. Hundreds of thousands of them nest on the atoll every winter, making it one of the largest albatross colonies on earth, and it is home to Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, still raising chicks in her seventies.
