The Eritrea flag: three triangles and an olive wreath

The flag of Eritrea was adopted on 5 December 1995. A red isosceles triangle runs from the full height of the hoist to a point at the centre of the fly, dividing the rest of the flag into a green triangle above and a light blue triangle below. Inside the red, near the hoist, is a gold emblem: an upright olive branch encircled by an olive wreath. The green is usually read as the land and agriculture, the blue as the Red Sea coast, the red as sacrifice, and the gold as mineral wealth. An earlier version used between 1993 and 1995 had different proportions and a slightly different emblem. Our Eritrea flag follows the 1995 design with the wreath sharply printed in gold.

Independence Day, community events and cycling

Independence Day on 24 May is the main date for the Eritrean flag, marked by Eritrean communities in London, Birmingham, Leeds and elsewhere with music, coffee ceremonies and family gatherings. The flag is also familiar from professional cycling, where Eritrean riders such as Biniam Girmay, who won stages and the green jersey at the 2024 Tour de France, are cheered on by fans waving it at the roadside. Churches, students’ societies and cultural festivals use the bunting and hand flags.

Eritrea flag sizes and grades
