The Sudanese flag: pan-Arab stripes and a green triangle

Sudan’s flag is three horizontal bands of red, white and black with a green triangle at the hoist, its point reaching a third of the way across. The red, white, black and green are the pan-Arab colours drawn from the Arab Revolt flag of 1916 and shared with Egypt, Jordan, Syria and others, and in Sudan the red is read as the struggle and sacrifice of the nation’s martyrs, the white as peace, light and optimism, the black as the country itself, whose name in Arabic means the land of the blacks, and the green as Islam, agriculture and prosperity. The flag was adopted on 20 May 1970, replacing the blue, yellow and green tricolour of 1956 that stood for the Nile, the desert and the farmland. The proportions are 1:2. 1 January and Sudan in Britain

Independence Day on 1 January marks the lowering of the British and Egyptian flags in Khartoum in 1956, and the flag is also raised for Eid, for graduations and for weddings, where the colours appear on the sashes and the cake. Britain’s Sudanese community is long established, with large populations in London, Manchester, Brighton and Birmingham, doctors and engineers trained in both countries, a network of Sudanese schools and societies, and community football tournaments and cultural days where the flag is everywhere. In sport the Falcons of Jediane, the national football team, were founder members of the Confederation of African Football and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1970, and their return to the finals in Morocco brought the flag back into British living rooms, alongside the Khartoum derby between Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh, which Sudanese fans follow from abroad.

Choosing a Sudan flag

The Sudan flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Sudan bunting

Sudan bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the flag and stitched to a tape. Three metres trims a doorway or a top table; nine metres runs round a community hall, a café or a garden for 1 January or a tournament final. The pennants are weatherproof polyester and lengths join end to end. Hand flags and table flags
