The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina: triangle and stars

The current flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a medium blue field with a yellow right-angled triangle along the upper fly and a diagonal row of white five-pointed stars running beside its hypotenuse, with a half star cut off at the top and bottom edges. It was adopted on 4 February 1998, after the parliament could not agree on a design, and the blue and yellow were chosen to echo the colours of the European flag. The three points of the triangle are read as the three constituent peoples of the country, Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs, and the triangle also suggests the roughly triangular outline of the state on the map; the stars are those of Europe, drawn as a line running off both edges to suggest they continue without end. The flag it replaced, used from 1992 to 1998, was white with a central blue shield bearing six golden fleurs-de-lis and a white diagonal band, the medieval arms of the Kotromanić dynasty; we stock it as the Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–1998 flag in 5ft x 3ft. Statehood Day, Independence Day and the Zmajevi

Statehood Day on 25 November recalls the 1943 ZAVNOBiH assembly, and Independence Day on 1 March the 1992 referendum; both are marked with flag displays, and 1 March is the date the diaspora most often celebrates. Football is the great unifier of the flag: the Zmajevi, the Dragons, reached the 2014 World Cup in Brazil under Safet Sušić with Edin Džeko, Miralem Pjanić and Asmir Begović, and the World Cup 2026 Bosnia and Herzegovina team bundle packs a flag, bunting and hand flags for the next campaign. Basketball, handball and the skiing on the Olympic slopes of Jahorina and Bjelašnica, hosts of the 1984 Winter Games, carry the colours too. In the UK, Bosnian communities in Birmingham, London, Derby and Manchester hold 1 March gatherings, cultural evenings and football tournaments, and the flag is a regular at Balkan festivals.

Sizes, grades and fittings

For a flagpole, a club wall or a community centre use the 5ft x 3ft; for a window, a desk wall or a stall the 3ft x 2ft; for a large fixed pole or a stage backdrop the 8ft x 5ft; and for a car or a hand pole the 20x12in. Flagtex is printed woven polyester for indoor use and short spells outside, while DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a season on a mast. Both have a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be finished with clips or rope and toggle. The 1992–1998 flag is a Flagtex 5ft x 3ft only.

Bosnia and Herzegovina bunting

Bosnia and Herzegovina bunting is a tape of rectangular pennants in the blue, yellow and white-star design, sold in 3m and 9m runs. A 3m run suits a doorway, a cafe counter or a classroom; a 9m run goes the length of a hall, a marquee or a bar for a match screening. The polyester pennants are printed on both faces and can stay out in the rain.

Hand flags and table flags
