The Gabon flag: forest, equator and ocean

Gabon's flag has three equal horizontal bands of green, yellow and blue. Green stands for the rainforest that covers most of the country, yellow for the equator, which runs right through Gabon, and blue for the Atlantic coastline. The flag was adopted in 1960, the year Gabon gained independence from France; an earlier version had a narrower yellow band and the French tricolour in the canton. Unlike most African flags it leaves out the classic pan-African red. On our Gabon flag the three bands are equal in height.

Independence Day, rainforest and football

Gabon became independent on 17 August 1960. Around a tenth of the country is protected in national parks, including Loango, where elephants and hippos walk on the beaches, and Lopé, a UNESCO site. On the football field the Panthers have produced stars such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who captained Arsenal and shared the Premier League Golden Boot. Gabonese students and fans in Britain fly the flag on 17 August and on Africa Cup of Nations nights.
