The St Lucia flag: the Pitons on a blue sea

Saint Lucia’s flag is a field of cerulean blue carrying a gold triangle set in front of a larger black triangle edged in white. The device is the two Pitons, the twin volcanic peaks rising out of the sea at Soufrière that are the island’s emblem, and the artist Dunstan St Omer drew it for the move to associated statehood on 1 March 1967. Blue is the sky and the Caribbean and Atlantic that meet around the island, gold is the sunshine and prosperity, and black and white together stand for the two races that built the island working as one, the black triangle rising above the white border. The triangle proportions were adjusted in 1979 at independence and again in 2002 to the version flown today, and the ratio is 1:2. Our St Lucia flag uses the specified light cerulean rather than a royal blue, and prints the white edge of the black Piton cleanly, which is where cheaper flags go wrong.

22 February, Creole Day and St Lucians in Britain

Independence Day on 22 February recalls 1979 and is celebrated with a parade in Castries, a national service and the flag on every minibus, while Jounen Kwéyòl, International Creole Day on the last Sunday of October, turns the whole island out in madras and the national colours. The St Lucian community in Britain is one of the larger Caribbean communities, rooted in the Windrush generation in London, Birmingham and Leeds, with independence dinners, a Creole Day in London and a strong presence at Notting Hill Carnival. The flag has had a tremendous few years in sport: Julien Alfred won the 100 metres at the Paris Olympics in 2024, the island’s first ever Olympic medal, and Daren Sammy and Johnson Charles carried it in West Indies colours, with the Daren Sammy Stadium at Gros Islet now a regular venue for England tours. Saint Lucia Jazz in May and the Carnival in July are the other weeks when the flag is everywhere.

Choosing a St Lucia flag

The St Lucia flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. St Lucia bunting

St Lucia bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the Pitons flag and sewn to a tape. A 3m string frames a doorway or a sound system; 9m runs down a float, round a church hall or along a garden fence for an independence party in February. The pennants are polyester and weatherproof, lengths join end to end, and plain blue, gold and black strings from the bunting range stretch the display.

Hand flags and table flags

St Lucia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for carnival, the cricket and a school parade. The St Lucia table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or a dinner, and the sleeved satin table flag is the formal choice for a high commission or a wedding table.
