The Puerto Rican flag: stripes, triangle and the lone star
The flag of Puerto Rico has five horizontal stripes, three red and two white, with a blue equilateral triangle at the hoist holding a single white five-pointed star. It was drawn up in 1895 by members of the Puerto Rican section of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York, and it deliberately mirrors the Cuban flag with the colours reversed, to show the shared cause of the two islands. The red stripes are read as the blood of those who fought for the island, the white stripes as liberty and the rights of the individual, the triangle as the three branches of government and the star as the island itself. The flag was officially adopted by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico on 25 July 1952. Both a light sky blue, used in the 1890s, and a darker navy blue are seen on the triangle, and the shade is a matter of taste rather than error. Constitution Day, the parade and Boricua sport
Constitution Day on 25 July marks the 1952 constitution, and the flag is everywhere on 19 November, Discovery of Puerto Rico Day, and at the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián in Old San Juan each January. On the mainland the biggest show is the National Puerto Rican Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in New York every June. Sport adds baseball, with Roberto Clemente, Iván Rodríguez and Carlos Correa; boxing, with Félix “Tito” Trinidad, Miguel Cotto and Amanda Serrano; basketball; and Olympic gold for Mónica Puig in tennis at Rio 2016 and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the 100m hurdles in Tokyo. The music goes even further, from salsa to reggaeton and Bad Bunny, and in Britain the flag is bought for Latin nights, salsa and bachata classes, Bad Bunny concert trips and Puerto Rican families and students in London, as well as by baseball and boxing fans.
