The USSR flag: a historical design, 1923–1991

The flag sold here is the historical state flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It is a plain red field with, in the upper hoist corner, a gold hammer and sickle crossed beneath a red five-pointed star outlined in gold. The hammer stood for industrial workers and the sickle for agricultural workers. A flag of this pattern was first adopted in 1923, shortly after the Union was formed, and the design was refined over the following decades, with the final standard version, the one we stock, specified in 1955 and confirmed in 1980. It was lowered from the Kremlin for the last time on 25 December 1991, and the flag is now a historical design. Our USSR flag places the emblem in the canton area at the correct size and position against the red.

Customers for this historical flag are mostly collectors of former national flags, schools, colleges and universities teaching twentieth-century history, film, television and theatre productions set during the Cold War or the Second World War that need accurate set dressing, and museums and re-enactment groups.
