The Algerian flag: green, white and the red crescent

Algeria’s flag is divided vertically into a green half at the hoist and a white half at the fly, with a red five-pointed star and crescent set over the dividing line in the centre. It was adopted on 3 July 1962, two days before independence from France was formally declared, and the design is taken directly from the banner used by the Front de Libération Nationale during the war of 1954 to 1962, which in turn drew on an earlier flag associated with Emir Abdelkader and the nationalist movement of the 1930s. Green is read as the colour of Islam and of the land, white as peace and purity, and red as the blood of those who died in the independence struggle. The crescent in the Algerian version has unusually long horns, reaching further round than on most other Islamic-world flags, and the star sits inside its arc rather than beside it. The proportions are 2:3. Our Algeria flag prints the crescent in the specified red with the horns extended correctly, and the green is the mid shade used on the official pattern rather than the darker tone sometimes seen on souvenir flags.

5 July, 1 November and the Fennecs

Independence Day on 5 July is the main flag day, with 1 November, the anniversary of the start of the revolution in 1954, a close second. In Britain the Algerian community is concentrated in north London, with Finsbury Park and Blackstock Road long nicknamed Little Algiers, and the flag comes out there for both dates, for Eid gatherings and above all for football. Les Fennecs, the Desert Foxes, won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1990 and again in 2019, and the celebrations after Riyad Mahrez lifted the trophy in Cairo filled the streets around Finsbury Park and Barbès alike. Algeria have reached the World Cup in 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014, when they took Germany to extra time in the round of 16, and they are in the 2026 finals, which is where the World Cup 2026 Algeria team bundle comes in: a flag, a run of bunting and hand flags in one pack at a lower price than buying them separately. Boxing, judo and the middle-distance runners who followed Noureddine Morceli and Taoufik Makhloufi are the other sporting outlets for the flag.

Which size of Algeria flag

The Algeria flag is listed in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. 5ft x 3ft is the one for a garden pole, a café front or a balcony; 3ft x 2ft fits a short wall pole or a shop window; 8ft x 5ft is a stage, a club house or a fan-park backdrop; 20x12in is a car window or a hand pole. There are two grades. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester, light enough to fly in a breath of wind and meant for occasional use; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted polyester with a double-stitched hem, priced higher and meant for a pole that is up all year. The header is sewn on both with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be taken with clips or a rope and toggle instead.

Algeria bunting

Algeria bunting is supplied in 3m and 9m lengths, with the green-white-crescent design repeated on each rectangular pennant. A 3m length covers a doorway, a counter or a car; 9m goes round a shop front, a classroom or along the ceiling of a shisha lounge for a match night. The pennants are polyester, so they will survive a shower, and several lengths can be tied end to end. Plain green and white lengths from the bunting section fill the gaps between.

Hand flags and table flags

Algeria hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, the smaller for children and crowd packs, the larger for the front of the stand. For the desk there is the Algeria table flag, a 6x4in flag with a base, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag for a reception counter, plus the satin table flag with a sleeved finish for a conference table. Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and the rest of North Africa are under world flags.

Algerian flag FAQs

What do the colours of the Algerian flag stand for?

Green for Islam and the land, white for peace and purity, red for the blood of the martyrs of the war of independence. The star and crescent are the symbols of Islam.

When was the Algeria flag adopted?

On 3 July 1962, immediately before independence on 5 July. The design comes from the FLN banner of the 1954–62 war and from earlier nationalist flags.

Why is the crescent on the Algerian flag so long?

The official specification sets the horns of the crescent well past the halfway point of the circle, which is a distinctive feature of this flag compared with Tunisia, Turkey or Pakistan.

Which way round does the Algerian flag fly?

Green at the hoist, next to the pole, white at the fly. The crescent opens towards the fly.

Is the Algeria flag the same as the FLN flag?

Essentially yes; the national flag adopted in 1962 kept the FLN design with the red star and crescent across the green and white halves.

What size Algeria flag for a 6m telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft. Use 3ft x 2ft on a wall bracket and 8ft x 5ft on a fixed 20–25ft pole or as a backdrop.
