The Antigua and Barbuda flag: a V for victory and a rising sun
The flag of Antigua and Barbuda has a red field with an inverted triangle, a V for victory, cut into it from the top edge; inside the V are bands of black, blue and white, with a golden sun of seven points rising from the black band. It was designed by Reginald Samuel, an art teacher, whose entry was picked from hundreds submitted, and was first flown on 27 February 1967, when the islands became an associated state, and kept at independence in 1981. The sun stands for the dawn of a new era, black for the African heritage of the people, blue for hope and the Caribbean Sea, white for the sand of the beaches and red for the energy of the people. Read from the top, the gold, blue and white also make the sun, sea and sand that bring visitors to the islands. Our Antigua and Barbuda flag has the sun and the three bands in the right order within the V.
Independence, Carnival and Antiguan cricket
Independence Day on 1 November is the national holiday, and Antigua Carnival, ending in the first days of August, fills St John’s with masquerade troupes, steelpan and calypso. Cricket made the flag famous: Sir Vivian Richards, Andy Roberts, Curtly Ambrose and Richie Richardson all came from Antigua, the Recreation Ground saw Brian Lara score 375 and later 400 not out, and the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium hosts West Indies Tests and white-ball matches. Britain’s Antiguan and Barbudan community, part of the wider Windrush generation, is strongest in London and the Midlands, and the flag appears at Notting Hill Carnival, at Lord’s and the Oval when the West Indies tour, and at independence dances every November.
Sizes, grades and fittings
For a Antigua and Barbuda flag that only comes out for Independence Day or a Test match, Flagtex is the economical choice: printed woven polyester with eyelets, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. For a Antigua and Barbuda flag left on a pole through wind and rain, DuraFlag is the heavier knitted fabric with double-stitched hems, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft on clips and 20x12in on rope and toggle. A 5ft x 3ft goes on a flagpole or over the barrier at the cricket, a 3ft x 2ft in a window or behind a bar, the 8ft x 5ft on a large mast or a carnival float and the 20x12in on a car or a boat.
Antigua and Barbuda bunting
Antigua and Barbuda bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the red V, the rising sun and the black, blue and white bands, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. Hang 3m over a front door, a rum punch table or a classroom display, or run 9m along a community centre, a church hall or a carnival float. Printed on both sides, the Antiguan polyester pennants can stay up outdoors for the whole celebration.
Hand flags and table flags
Antigua and Barbuda hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Test matches, carnival and Independence Day. The Antigua and Barbuda table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, a reception or a celebration dinner, and the large wooden Antigua and Barbuda table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission office or a function room. Barbados, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat and the West Indies flags are under world flags.
