The Benin flag: pan-African colours, restored in 1990
Benin's flag has a vertical green band at the hoist and two horizontal bands of yellow over red. Green is read as hope and renewal, yellow as the country's wealth and red as the courage of its ancestors. The design was first adopted in 1959, when the country was still called Dahomey, and kept after independence from France on 1 August 1960. In 1975 the country was renamed the People's Republic of Benin and a green flag with a red star replaced it, but the original tricolour returned in 1990 with the move to multiparty democracy. Our Benin flag has the green band at full height and the yellow and red split evenly.
Independence Day, Vodun and Beninese in the UK
Independence Day on 1 August is the main national celebration. On 10 January Benin holds its national Vodun Day, centred on the coastal town of Ouidah, which draws visitors from across the diaspora. Benin's football team, then known as the Squirrels and now as the Cheetahs, reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Beninese families and students in the UK fly the flag for all three.
