The Afghan tricolour: black, red and green

The Afghanistan flag stocked here is the vertical tricolour of black, red and green with the national emblem in white across the centre. The three colours have been on Afghan flags since the late 1920s: black is usually read as the past and the years of foreign rule, red as the blood spent winning independence, and green as hope, prosperity and the faith of the country. The emblem shows a mosque with its mihrab and pulpit, two flags, a wreath of wheat, the year 1298 in the solar Hijri calendar (1919, the year of independence) and the Shahada across the top. This exact drawing, with the emblem in white rather than gold, was fixed in 2013 and is the design flown by Afghan associations, cricket clubs and restaurants in Britain. Independence Day, Nowruz and the cricket

Afghan Independence Day is 19 August, marking the 1919 treaty that ended British control of the country’s foreign affairs, and it is the date the Afghan community centres in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds hang flags and bunting for a jashn with music and kebabs. Nowruz on 21 March, the Persian new year, is the other big flag day, with picnics, kite flying and family gatherings. On the sport side it is cricket above all: the Afghanistan national side draws a loud, flag-waving following at every T20 and one-day international in England, and plenty of Afghan-heritage players now turn out for county and club sides, so the hand flags and the 5ft x 3ft sell in the weeks before a tour. The flag also goes up on restaurant fronts and in shops in Southall, Harrow, Hounslow and Small Heath, and on taxi dashboards. Pakistan, India, Iran and the rest of the region are in world flags.

The 1990s green, white and black flag

The Afghanistan Old flag is the horizontal green, white and black design with a gold emblem used by the Islamic State of Afghanistan between 1992 and 2001, before the tricolour returned. It comes as a 5ft x 3ft woven-polyester flag and is bought for history displays, film and theatre props and by families who left the country in that decade. The white flag introduced in Kabul in 2021 is not part of this range.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The tricolour comes in 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden flagpole, a community hall or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a mosque courtyard, a stage or a tall pole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print for a celebration or a season of fixtures, with brass eyelets in the header. DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag on a pole all year round, and you can choose plastic clips or a rope and toggle to suit the halyard.

Afghanistan bunting

Afghanistan bunting repeats the tricolour and emblem on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length frames a doorway or a restaurant counter, 9m runs the length of a community hall or across a marquee for an Independence Day jashn or a wedding, and several lengths tie end to end for a street.

Hand flags and table flags
