The Slovenian flag: white, blue, red and the Triglav arms

Slovenia’s flag is a horizontal tricolour of white, blue and red with the national coat of arms placed in the upper hoist, straddling the white and blue bands. The three colours are the pan-Slavic set that Slovenes first flew in Ljubljana in 1848, taken from the arms of Carniola, and they were kept through the Yugoslav years with a red star in the centre. The present flag was adopted on 27 June 1991, two days after the declaration of independence, with the star replaced by the arms designed by Marko Pogačnik: a shield showing the three peaks of Triglav, the highest mountain in the country, in white on blue, two wavy lines beneath for the Adriatic and the rivers, and three six-pointed gold stars above taken from the arms of the Counts of Celje. The ratio is 1:2. Because Russia and Slovakia fly the same three colours in the same order, the arms are what identifies the flag, and our Slovenia flag prints them sharply at the correct size in the hoist.

Statehood Day, Planica and the Tour

Statehood Day on 25 June marks the 1991 declaration, and Independence and Unity Day on 26 December recalls the referendum of 1990; Prešeren Day on 8 February, the day of Slovenian culture, is the other national holiday with the flag out. The Slovenian community in Britain is small, in London and the university towns, with the embassy’s Statehood Day reception and the Slovenian society’s gatherings the main occasions. Sport is where the flag is seen most, out of all proportion to the size of the country: Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič have made it a fixture at the roadside of the Tour de France, Luka Dončić carries it in the NBA and at EuroBasket, where Slovenia won in 2017, Jan Oblak and the football team reached Euro 2024, and the ski jumpers at Planica, the alpine skiers, Tina Maze and the cross-country teams fly it every winter. Climbers Janja Garnbret and the Olympic kayakers add to the medal count, and the handball and ice hockey teams have also played at world level.

Choosing a size and grade

The Slovenia flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester, light and economical, for a reception, a bar or a season on a pole; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched edge for permanent flying. 5ft x 3ft suits a garden pole, a bike-shop window or a bar, 3ft x 2ft a small window or wall bracket, 8ft x 5ft a roadside banner or stage backdrop, and 20x12in a car or hand pole. Both carry a sewn header with brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can also be had with clips or rope and toggle.

Slovenia bunting

Slovenia bunting is available in 3m and 9m lengths with the flag and arms printed on rectangular polyester pennants sewn to a tape. 3m dresses a counter or a doorway; 9m goes along a bar for a Tour stage, a basketball final or a ski-jumping weekend, or round a hall for Statehood Day. It copes with rain outdoors and lengths join end to end. Plain white, blue and red from the bunting range match it.

Hand flags and table flags

Slovenia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the roadside, the fan zone and the airport. The Slovenia table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or a trade stand, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a formal table. Croatia, Austria, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia are under world flags.
