The Netherlands Antilles flag

The Antilles flag in this collection is the flag of the Netherlands Antilles, the Dutch Caribbean grouping that existed from 1954 until 10 October 2010. Its flag, adopted in 1959, is a white field with a red vertical stripe through the centre and a blue horizontal band across the middle carrying white five-pointed stars. There were originally six stars, for Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten; when Aruba separated in 1986 the number was reduced to five. The red, white and blue are the colours of the Dutch flag. Since 2010 the flag has been historical: Curaçao and Sint Maarten became constituent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius became special municipalities of the Netherlands.

Who buys an Antilles table flag

The Antilles table flag is a small 6x4in flag on a stand, sold from £1.98. It suits collectors of historical flags, a model display, a quiz night on the Caribbean, or a family who lived in Willemstad or Philipsburg before 2010 and wants the flag they grew up with on a shelf. Schools covering the Dutch Caribbean also use it alongside modern flags to show how the islands have changed.
