The Taegukgi: taegeuk and four trigrams

The South Korea flag, the Taegukgi, is a white field with a red-over-blue taegeuk circle in the middle and a black trigram in each corner. The white stands for peace and purity and is the traditional colour of Korean dress; the taegeuk is the interlocking yin and yang, red for the positive cosmic forces and blue for the negative, in balance. The four trigrams are taken from the I Ching: three solid bars for heaven, three broken for earth, and the two mixed sets for water and fire, placed so that opposites face each other across the flag. The design dates from 1882, when the diplomat Park Yeong-hyo flew a version on his way to Japan, and the current proportions and the exact placing of the trigrams were set in 1949. Son, the Taegeuk Warriors and the K-pop crowd

Sizes, grades and fittings

20x12in suits a car window or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft a classroom, a dojang or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft a garden flagpole, a restaurant front or a match, and 8ft x 5ft a hall, a stage or a tall pole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for tournaments and celebrations; DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that flies outside all year, supplied with clips or a rope and toggle.

South Korea bunting carries the Taegukgi on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths.
