The Saaremaa flag

Saaremaa is Estonia’s largest island, lying at the mouth of the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea, and like each Estonian county it has its own flag. The design stocked here is divided horizontally, white above and green below, with the island’s blue shield in the white band bearing a white ship under sail, a reminder of Saaremaa’s long seafaring history and its Viking-age past. The white and green are the colours most associated with the island’s limestone shores and its forests and juniper heaths. Our Saaremaa flag is a 5ft x 3ft with eyelets at £7.99.

Kuressaare, windmills and island summers

Visitors know Saaremaa for the island capital Kuressaare with its medieval Episcopal Castle, the row of wooden windmills at Angla, the Kaali meteorite crater, spa hotels and quiet summer beaches. The flag is bought by Estonians living in the UK, by people who have holidayed or sailed in the Baltic, and by flag collectors who like regional flags from the Baltic states. It also makes a fitting decoration for a Jaanipäev midsummer party.
