The Cayman Islands flag: a blue ensign with the turtle crest
The flag of the Cayman Islands is a British blue ensign, a dark blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, bearing the territory’s coat of arms in the fly. The top of the shield shows a gold lion on red for Britain, and below it are three green stars, one each for Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, set over white and blue wavy lines for the sea; above the shield sits a green turtle on a pineapple, and the scroll beneath reads He hath founded it upon the seas. The arms were granted in 1958 and placed on the flag inside a white disc; in 1999 the disc was removed and the arms enlarged, giving the flag its present look. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and the red ensign version with the same arms is the civil ensign flown by Cayman-registered vessels. Our Cayman Islands flag carries the current arms without the white disc.
Pirates Week, Batabano and Cayman on the water
Cayman’s public holidays include National Heroes Day in January, Emancipation Day in May and Constitution Day in July, but the flag is most visible at Pirates Week in November, a festival of mock invasions, fireworks and heritage days, and at Batabano, the Cayman carnival held in May. George Town is one of the world’s largest financial centres and the islands run a major shipping registry, so the flag is a fixture on yachts and superyachts, in offices in the City of London and at law and fund firms with Cayman connections. Caymanians studying and working in the UK, divers who know Stingray City and the North Wall, and the Cayman Islands Government Office in London all have reasons to fly the blue ensign.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The main Cayman Islands flag comes in two grades. Flagtex, the printed woven polyester for indoor use and short spells outside, is stocked in 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft with eyelets; DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems, is stocked in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips and in 20x12in with rope and toggle. A 5ft x 3ft suits a garden pole or a villa, a 3ft x 2ft an office wall or a window, the 8ft x 5ft a large mast and the 20x12in a boat’s stern staff or a car.
Cayman Islands civil ensigns
The Cayman Islands civil ensign is the red ensign with the Union Jack and the Cayman arms, the flag for Cayman-registered yachts and for anyone who wants the maritime version, in DuraFlag 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft with rope and toggle. The 1958-1999 civil ensign shows the earlier design with the arms inside a white disc, for collectors, former residents and historical displays, also in DuraFlag 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft on rope and toggle. Both Cayman ensigns use the heavier knitted fabric and reinforced hems that stand up to salt and wind.
Cayman Islands table flags
The Cayman Islands small table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base, for a desk in a fund administrator’s office, a dive shop counter or a dinner to celebrate Pirates Week. Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla and Montserrat flags are under world flags.
