St Ursula and the lamps: the BVI flag explained

The British Virgin Islands fly a Blue Ensign, with the Union Flag in the canton and the territory's coat of arms on the fly. The shield shows St Ursula dressed in white, holding a lamp, surrounded by a ring of further lamps, and the scroll beneath reads Vigilate, Latin for "be watchful". The story goes back to Columbus, who on his second voyage in 1493 named the islands after St Ursula and her legendary company of virgin followers. Sailing, the civil ensign and BVI events

The islands are one of the world's great sailing grounds, and charter yachts leave Road Town and the anchorages around Tortola and Virgin Gorda every day of the season. Vessels registered in the territory fly the red civil ensign at sea; we stock it in DuraFlag with rope and toggle, in 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft.
