The Brunei flag: yellow, two diagonals and the crest

The flag of Brunei Darussalam is a yellow field crossed by two diagonal stripes, white above black, with the red national crest in the centre. Yellow is the royal colour of the Malay sultanates and stands for the Sultan; the white and black stripes were added in 1906 to represent the two senior ministers, the Pengiran Bendahara and the Pengiran Pemancha, who signed the treaty with Britain, which is why the white stripe is slightly broader than the black. The crest, placed on the flag in 1959 when the first written constitution was adopted, shows a crescent for Islam carrying the motto Always in service with God’s guidance, with a royal parasol and wings of four feathers above it, two upraised hands at the sides and a scroll reading Brunei Darussalam, the Abode of Peace, below. It is one of the few national flags where the stripes run diagonally from the upper hoist to the lower fly. Our Brunei flag is printed with the crest in correct red on the exact yellow of the official shade, and with the white stripe uppermost as specified.

National Day, the Sultan’s birthday and Hari Raya

National Day on 23 February marks the end of British protection in 1984 and is celebrated with a mass parade at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri Begawan, the whole capital in yellow and the flag on every building for the month. The Sultan’s birthday on 15 July is the other state occasion, with celebrations held across the four districts, and the flag is also out for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, when the palace opens its doors for three days of public greetings. Brunei has a long connection with Britain: thousands of Bruneian students study at UK universities each year, with Brunei Hall in Paddington as their London base, and the Brunei Students Union and the High Commission in Belgravia organise National Day dinners and sports days where the flag is carried. On the sporting side DPMM FC, the Sultan’s club, play in the Singapore Premier League, and Brunei competes at the SEA Games and the Commonwealth Games.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft is the size for a flagpole, a hall or a student society stand; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, an office or a desk wall; an 8ft x 5ft for a stage backdrop or a large fixed mast; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short use outdoors, and DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a flag left up through the season. Both grades carry a sewn header and brass eyelets; clips or rope and toggle can be chosen on the DuraFlag.

Brunei bunting

Brunei bunting is a line of rectangular yellow pennants, each with the diagonals and crest, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length dresses a doorway, a Hari Raya table or a classroom; the 9m length runs along a hall, a marquee or a student union bar for 23 February. The pennants are polyester, printed on both sides, and weatherproof.

Hand flags and table flags

Brunei hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the National Day parade, graduation photos and school presentations. The Brunei table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a reception or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a conference room.
