The Lebanese flag: red, white and the cedar

The flag of Lebanon is three horizontal bands, red, white and red, in the proportions 1:2:1, with a green cedar of Lebanon in the centre of the white band touching both red stripes. It was designed and adopted on 7 December 1943, a few weeks after independence from the French mandate, and the cedar had been the emblem of Mount Lebanon for far longer, appearing on the flags of the 1920s and in scripture as a symbol of holiness, strength and eternity. The red bands are read as the blood shed in the country’s defence, the white as peace and the snow on the mountains. The constitution specifies that the cedar is entirely green, trunk included, and a brown trunk is the mistake that marks a badly drawn flag. Our Lebanon flag keeps the cedar all green, with the tree sized to touch the red bands as the specification requires, in the 2:3 proportion.

Independence Day, the Cedars and the restaurant trade

Independence Day on 22 November is the date most Lebanese flags fly, in Beirut and in the Lebanese communities of London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, and the embassy and Lebanese cultural and student societies hold receptions around it. For much of the year the flag is most visible in the UK on restaurant walls: Lebanese food is everywhere from Edgware Road to small-town high streets, and a 3ft x 2ft flag behind the counter is as much a part of the fit-out as the charcoal grill. In sport, Lebanon’s rugby league side, the Cedars, play Rugby League World Cups, most recently in England in 2022, and the national basketball team is one of Asia’s strongest, with football and the Lebanese Premier League following behind.

Lebanon flag sizes and grades

The 5ft x 3ft flag suits a flagpole, a restaurant frontage or a community hall; 3ft x 2ft fits behind a counter, on a stall or on a short pole; 8ft x 5ft is for a large fixed pole or a stage backdrop; and the 20x12in is the car and hand-pole size. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester for events and short spells outside, DuraFlag a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for everyday flying. Every size has a sewn header with brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or a rope and toggle.

Lebanon bunting

Lebanon bunting repeats the cedar flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape in weatherproof polyester, for a restaurant terrace, an Independence Day reception or a wedding. Plain red and white lengths from the bunting range will carry the colours further down a long room.

Hand flags and table flags

Lebanon hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for match days, arrivals and parades. The Lebanon table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a restaurant table, an office or an embassy desk, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in is the counter-top version. Jordan, Syria, Cyprus, Egypt and the wider region are under world flags.

Lebanese flag FAQs

What does the cedar on the Lebanese flag mean?

The cedar of Lebanon has been the emblem of the country and of Mount Lebanon for centuries and stands for holiness, eternity, peace and resilience. It appears in the Bible as the tree of the Lebanon mountains.

What do the red and white on the Lebanon flag stand for?

Red for the blood shed to defend the country and white for peace and the snow on the mountains. The white band is twice the height of each red band.

Should the cedar trunk be brown or green?

Green. The Lebanese constitution specifies a wholly green cedar, and flags with a brown trunk are incorrect. Our flag is printed with the whole tree in green.

When is Lebanese Independence Day?

22 November, marking independence from the French mandate in 1943. The flag itself was adopted on 7 December that year.

Which way up does the Lebanon flag go?

Red at the top and bottom, white in the middle, with the cedar upright. The design is the same from either side, so it reads correctly on both faces of a pole.

What size Lebanon flag for a restaurant?

3ft x 2ft for a wall behind the counter, 5ft x 3ft for a frontage or a pole outside, and a run of bunting along the terrace or the window for occasions.

How quickly can a Lebanon flag be delivered?
