The El Salvador flag: five volcanoes and a cap of liberty
The flag of El Salvador has three horizontal bands of cobalt blue, white and cobalt blue, with the national coat of arms in the centre. The arms show a triangle holding five volcanoes rising from the sea, for the five members of the old Federal Republic of Central America, with a red Phrygian cap of liberty on a staff, a rainbow and the date 15 September 1821, ringed by flags and a laurel wreath of fourteen bunches for the departments and the words República de El Salvador en la América Central; the scroll below carries the motto Dios, Unión, Libertad. The blue-white-blue pattern comes from the Central American federation and is shared with Honduras and Nicaragua, and El Salvador readopted it in 1912 after a period with a stars-and-stripes design. Independence Day, La Selecta and the surf coast
Independence Day on 15 September is shared with the rest of Central America and is celebrated with school parades, marching bands and the flag on every house, after the independence torch has been carried through the country; 6 August, the feast of El Salvador del Mundo, closes the summer festivals in San Salvador. The football team, La Selecta, draws devoted crowds at the Estadio Cuscatlán, and the Pacific coast at El Tunco, Punta Roca and El Zonte has made the country a surfing destination that has hosted the ISA World Surfing Games. Britain’s Salvadoran community is small and close-knit, mostly in London, with Latin American church congregations, pupuserías and cultural groups flying the flag in September and on National Pupusa Day in November.
