The Burundi flag: unity, work and progress

Burundi's flag is crossed by a white saltire that divides it into red triangles at top and bottom and green triangles at the hoist and fly. In the middle is a white disc with three red six-pointed stars outlined in green. Red stands for the struggle for independence, green for hope and white for peace. The three stars echo the national motto, Unity, Work, Progress, and are also linked to the country's three main peoples, the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The flag has been in use since 1967. Drummers, independence and the diaspora

Burundi became independent from Belgium on 1 July 1962, and that date is the main national holiday. The country is famous for its royal drummers, whose ritual dance with huge drums carried on the head is listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. In Britain, Burundian families and church groups, along with charities working around Lake Tanganyika, fly the flag on 1 July and for football, where the national team, the Swallows, made their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2019.
