The Dominica flag: the Nature Isle and its parrot

The flag of Dominica is a deep green field crossed by a triple-banded cross of yellow, black and white, with a red disc in the centre holding a Sisserou parrot surrounded by ten green stars. The Sisserou, or imperial amazon, lives only in Dominica’s rainforest and is the national bird, and the ten stars stand for the island’s ten parishes. Green is for the forests that earn Dominica the name Nature Isle, yellow for the sunshine, the crops and the indigenous Kalinago people, black for the African heritage of most Dominicans, white for the rivers and waterfalls, and the cross for the Christian faith. Designed by Alwin Bully and raised at independence on 3 November 1978, it is one of only two national flags to use purple, in the parrot’s plumage, the other being Nicaragua’s. Dominica is a separate country from the Dominican Republic, and our Dominica flag is the green Caribbean design with the parrot.

Independence, Creole Day and the World Creole Music Festival

Independence Day on 3 November is followed by Community Service Day on 4 November, and the season opens with Creole Day in late October, when Dominicans wear the wob dwiyet and madras, and the World Creole Music Festival in Roseau, three nights of bouyon, cadence-lypso and zouk. Cricket fans know Windsor Park in Roseau as a West Indies Test ground. The UK has a long-established Dominican community, many of whom came in the Windrush years and settled in London, Leeds and Birmingham; the flag flies at independence dinners, church thanksgiving services and Notting Hill Carnival, and was raised widely in 2017 when the island was rebuilding after Hurricane Maria.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Two grades of Dominica flag are kept in stock. For the Dominica flag, Flagtex, the printed woven polyester that suits indoor use or occasional days outside, comes in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with eyelets; DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight polyester with double-stitched hems for permanent flying, comes in 20x12in with rope and toggle and in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips. Pick the 5ft x 3ft for a pole or a church hall, the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a market stall, the 8ft x 5ft for a carnival truck or a big mast and the 20x12in for the car on 3 November.

Dominica bunting

Dominica bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the green field, the three-colour cross and the Sisserou parrot, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. Hang 3m over a doorway, a food table or a Creole Day classroom, and 9m along a community hall, a church or a carnival float. Printed on both sides, the Dominican polyester pennants can stay up outdoors for the whole celebration.

Hand flags and table flags

Dominica hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Creole Day, independence parades and cricket. The Dominica table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, a shop counter or a celebration table, and the large wooden Dominica table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission office or a dinner top table.
