The Romanian flag: blue, yellow and red

Romania’s flag is a vertical tricolour of blue at the hoist, yellow in the middle and red at the fly, in equal bands and a 2:3 proportion. The three colours were carried together by the revolutionaries of 1848 and had older roots in the arms of Wallachia and Moldavia; the vertical layout, modelled on the French tricolour, became the national flag of the united principalities in 1867. Under the communist state the centre band carried the republic’s emblem, and during the December 1989 revolution crowds cut it out, leaving the flag with a hole in the middle, an image that went around the world. The emblem was formally dropped on 27 December 1989 and the plain tricolour has been the flag of Romania ever since. Our Romania flag is printed in the cobalt blue, chrome yellow and vermilion red of the 1994 law, with the blue band sewn at the hoist.

Great Union Day, Mărțișor and the Tricolorii

Great Union Day on 1 December, the anniversary of the 1918 union with Transylvania, is Romania’s national day, and the Romanian Orthodox churches, cultural centres and shops in London, Northampton, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow mark it with flags, food and folk costume. Union Day on 24 January and the Mărțișor spring tradition on 1 March follow soon after. In sport the Tricolorii return to the European Championship stage every few years, the Stejarii (the Oaks) play Rugby World Cups and the Rugby Europe Championship, and Romanian gymnasts, tennis players and handball teams keep the flag in view. With around half a million Romanian-born residents, the UK has one of the biggest Romanian communities outside Romania, and the flag hangs in Romanian minimarkets, bakeries and restaurants from Burnt Oak to Boston.

Choosing a size and grade

Take the 5ft x 3ft flag for a pole, a shop front or a church hall; the 3ft x 2ft for a small pole, a stall or a bedroom wall; the 8ft x 5ft for a large flagpole or a stage backdrop; and 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the economical printed polyester for celebrations and a few weeks outside, while DuraFlag is the heavy knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for a flag flown daily. Every flag has a sewn header with brass eyelets; DuraFlag can also be supplied with clips or a rope and toggle for a halyard.

Romania bunting

Romania bunting puts the tricolour on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape, for the front of a Romanian shop on 1 December, a wedding, a christening party or a football screening. The pennants are weatherproof polyester so a run can stay up outside through a wet December weekend. Plain blue, yellow and red are also in the main bunting range for mixing in.

Hand flags and table flags

Romania hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for match days, parades and school events. The Romania table flag is a 6x4in desk flag with a base for an office, a restaurant counter or a language-school classroom, and the large wooden table flag is the 18x12in reception version. The Moldova flag, with the eagle in the centre band, is under world flags, as are Hungary, Bulgaria and Serbia.
