The Ivory Coast flag: orange, white and green
The flag of Côte d’Ivoire is a vertical tricolour of orange, white and green, with the orange at the hoist. It was adopted on 3 December 1959, eight months before independence from France on 7 August 1960, and the layout follows the French tricolour that the country had flown until then. Orange is explained as the savanna of the north and the land itself, white as peace and unity, green as the forests of the south and hope for the future. It is the mirror image of the Irish flag, green at the hoist and orange at the fly, and the two are told apart by which colour is next to the pole; the Ivorian flag is also slightly shorter at 2:3 against Ireland’s 1:2. The official name of the country has been Côte d’Ivoire in all languages since 1986, though Ivory Coast remains the common English usage and the name under which the flag is searched for and sold in Britain. Our Ivory Coast flag prints the orange in the warm official tone rather than the redder shade of the Irish flag, so the two are not confused on a pole.
7 August and the Elephants
Independence Day on 7 August is the national holiday, with 15 November, National Peace Day, a second civic date. Ivorians in the UK are a growing community, in south-east London, Manchester and Birmingham, with church services and dinners for 7 August, and the flag turns up most of all for football. The Elephants won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992, 2015 and as hosts in 2024, when they came back from almost being eliminated in the group stage to beat Nigeria in the final in Abidjan; they went to the World Cups of 2006, 2010 and 2014, and are at the 2026 finals, for which the World Cup 2026 Ivory Coast team bundle packs a flag, bunting and hand flags together at a saving on the separate prices. Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré and Kolo Touré made the flag a familiar sight at Stamford Bridge and the Etihad, and the sprinter Marie-Josée Ta Lou and taekwondo gold medallist Cheick Cissé have carried it at the Olympics.
Sizes and the two grades
The Ivory Coast flag is listed in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, each in Flagtex and DuraFlag. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester for occasional outdoor use and indoor display; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched edge, priced higher and made for permanent flying. Take 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a church or a bar, 3ft x 2ft for a window or a short wall pole, 8ft x 5ft for a fan-park backdrop or stage, and 20x12in for a car or hand pole. Both grades have a sewn header with brass eyelets, with clips and rope-and-toggle options on the DuraFlag.
Ivory Coast bunting
Ivory Coast bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the tricolour and sewn to a tape. 3m edges a counter or a doorway; 9m goes round a hall for an Independence Day dinner or along a pub ceiling for the Elephants. It is polyester, so it can hang outside over a garden, and lengths join end to end. Plain orange, white and green from the bunting range work as fillers.
Hand flags and table flags
Ivory Coast hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the fan zone, church parades and school Africa days. The Ivory Coast table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a desk or reception, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a formal table. Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, Mali and Cameroon are under world flags.
