The Rhodesia flag: a historical design, 1968–1979
The flag sold here is the historical flag of Rhodesia, first raised on 11 November 1968 and used until 1979. It is a vertical triband of green, white and green, with the three bands of equal width, and the Rhodesian coat of arms placed in the centre of the white band. The arms show a green shield with a gold pick in the lower part, recalling mining, and a gold upper band carrying a red lion between two thistles. The shield is supported by two sable antelopes, with a carved soapstone bird standing on the crest, based on the birds found at Great Zimbabwe, and a scroll beneath bearing the Latin motto Sit Nomine Digna. Before this design, from 1964 to 1968, a light blue ensign with the Union Flag in the canton was used. Our Rhodesia flag reproduces the 1968 design with the arms printed in full colour.
