The Andorra flag: a tricolour with two co-princes on its arms
The flag of Andorra is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red, with the national coat of arms in the centre of the yellow band, which is a little wider than the other two. The arms tell the story of the principality’s shared rule: a bishop’s mitre and crozier for the Bishop of Urgell, three red pales on gold for the Counts of Foix, the four red pales of Catalonia and two red cows for Béarn, above the motto Virtus Unita Fortior, strength united is stronger. Since the agreements of 1278 Andorra has had two co-princes, today the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France, and the blue and red are often read as French colours alongside the yellow and red of Catalonia and Spain. Without its arms the tricolour would be almost identical to the flags of Romania and Chad and very like Moldova’s, which is why the crest matters. Our Andorra flag carries the full coat of arms in colour on the yellow band.
Meritxell Day, the ski season and Andorran sport
Andorra’s national day is 8 September, the feast of Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint, when people make the trip up to the sanctuary at Meritxell and the flag hangs from balconies in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany; 14 March, Constitution Day, marks the constitution approved in 1993. For many Britons the Andorran flag is the backdrop to a school or family ski trip, since Soldeu, El Tarter and Pas de la Casa in the Grandvalira area are among the most popular resorts with UK skiers and snowboarders, and the flag goes home as a souvenir or onto a ski club wall. The national football side has met England and Wales in competitive matches, and MoraBanc Andorra play top-flight basketball in Spain’s Liga ACB. British seasonaires and ski instructors, and the Andorran and Catalan community in the UK, use the flag for leaving parties, ski club dinners and Meritxell Day gatherings.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Andorra flag is stocked in two grades: Flagtex, a printed woven polyester for indoor displays and shorter spells outdoors, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with brass eyelets, and DuraFlag, a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems for a Andorra flag that stays up all year, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips plus a 20x12in on rope and toggle. Choose the 5ft x 3ft for a pole or a chalet balcony, the 3ft x 2ft for a ski club room or a window, the 8ft x 5ft for a big mast or an event backdrop and the 20x12in for a car aerial or a boat.
Andorra bunting
Andorra bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the blue, yellow and red tricolour with the arms, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. The 3m length dresses a chalet doorway, a ski club bar or a classroom display; the 9m length goes round an après-ski party, a village hall or a garden for Meritxell Day. The Andorran pennants are printed on both sides of a weatherproof polyester.
Hand flags and table flags
Andorra hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for ski race finish lines, school projects and away ends. The Andorra table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, a travel agent’s window or a dinner table, and the large wooden Andorra table flag at 18x12in suits a reception desk or a conference stage. France, Spain, Catalonia, Monaco and Liechtenstein flags are under world flags.
