Burns Night, 25 January
Burns Night is on Monday 25 January 2027. It marks the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, who was born in Alloway in Ayrshire on 25 January 1759 and died in Dumfries in 1796, aged 37. The first Burns Supper was held in 1801 by friends of the poet at his birthplace cottage in Alloway, and within a few years Burns clubs were meeting on his birthday. It is not a bank holiday, so most suppers are held on the night itself or on the nearest Friday or Saturday.
A traditional Burns Supper follows a set running order: the Selkirk Grace, the haggis piped in, the Address to a Haggis and the toast to it, the meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, the Immortal Memory speech, the Toast to the Lassies and the reply, poems and songs, and the whole room singing Auld Lang Syne to finish. The flags are there to set the scene: a Saltire behind the top table, bunting round the hall and a table flag in the middle of each table.
Which flags for a Burns Supper
The Saltire in light blue or navy blue is the national flag of Scotland and the one to hang behind the speakers. The Lion Rampant flag, a red lion on gold, is the Royal Banner of Scotland and is often hung alongside it. For something less formal there are the Scotland the Brave, Bonnie Scotland and tartan-pattern Tartan Army flags, the Highland Cow flag and the historic Scottish Red Ensign. A 5ft x 3ft flag is the usual size behind a top table.
Bunting for the hall
Light blue Saltire bunting, navy Saltire bunting and Lion Rampant bunting come in rectangle lengths, with a triangle cut for a classroom or a pub and giant bunting for a large function room. Bonnie Scotland and Scotland the Brave bunting mix in well with the Saltire.
Table flags and hand flags
A Saltire table flag or Lion Rampant table flag with a base marks each table, with satin and wooden versions for a formal dinner and satin Lion Rampant table flags to match. Saltire hand flags and Lion Rampant hand flags come in packs for schools and for guests to wave when the haggis comes in.
Burns Night flag FAQs
When is Burns Night 2027?
Monday 25 January 2027. Burns Night is always on 25 January, Robert Burns’s birthday, though many clubs hold their supper on the nearest weekend.
Which flag should I fly on Burns Night?
The Saltire, the white diagonal cross of St Andrew on blue, which is the national flag of Scotland. The Lion Rampant is often hung beside it.
Light blue or navy Saltire?
Both are flown. In 2003 a Scottish Parliament committee recommended a lighter sky blue, so newer flags tend to be light blue; navy was common for decades before that.
Can I use the Lion Rampant for a Burns Supper?
Yes. Strictly it is the monarch’s Royal Banner of Scotland, but displaying it as a sign of Scottish pride is widely accepted and it is common at suppers and matches.
How much bunting do I need for a function room?
A 9m length covers one wall of a typical hall; allow two or three 9m lengths, or a 20m length, to go round the room.
What size flag for behind the top table?
A 5ft x 3ft flag fills the wall behind a top table; a 3ft x 2ft suits a smaller room or a lectern.
How late can I order for Burns Night?
Order before 2pm and it leaves our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse the same day for free 1–2 day UK delivery. An order on Wednesday 20 January is in good time for Monday 25 January.
