Lancashire Day, 27 November

Lancashire Day is 27 November, and in 2026 it falls on a Friday. It marks the day in 1295 when Lancashire first sent representatives to Parliament, summoned by Edward I to what became known as the Model Parliament. The modern celebration has been held every year since 1996, promoted by the Friends of Real Lancashire and taken up by councils, schools, pubs and businesses across the county. Town criers read the Lancashire Day proclamation in market squares and outside town halls, people wear a red rose, and the county flag goes up on civic flagpoles.

The red rose of Lancashire

The red rose is the badge of the House of Lancaster, set against the white rose of York in the Wars of the Roses of the fifteenth century, and it has stood for the county ever since. You will find it on the badges of Lancashire County Cricket Club, on regimental insignia and on town and civic crests from Lancaster to Preston. A Roses match between Lancashire and Yorkshire still carries the old rivalry in good humour.

The Lancashire flag: red rose on gold

For most of the twentieth century the unofficial Lancashire flag was a red rose on white. When the Friends of Real Lancashire tried to register it with the Flag Institute, an identical design was already on record for the Scottish town of Montrose, so a gold (yellow) field was chosen instead, using the county’s livery colours. The red rose on gold was registered as the flag of Lancashire in 2008, and that is our Lancashire flag. The older red rose on white is still widely flown by clubs, pubs and people who grew up with it, so we stock both.

Traditional county and modern boundaries

Lancashire Day celebrates the historic county, which runs from the Furness peninsula and Lancaster down through Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn and Burnley to Wigan, Bolton, Manchester, Salford, Liverpool and Warrington. The local government changes of 1974 moved much of the south of the county into the new metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside, Furness into Cumbria and Warrington and Widnes into Cheshire, while today’s Lancashire County Council area covers the centre and north. The flag and the day belong to the whole historic county, so you will see the red rose flown in Bolton and Liverpool as well as in Lancaster and Preston.

Lancashire flags: sizes and grades

The Lancashire flag comes in 20x12in for a window or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a shop or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a house or garden pole, and 8ft x 5ft for a town hall, a cricket ground or a tall pole. Flagtex is the woven polyester flag for the day and the season; the Lancashire nylon flag lifts in a light breeze; and the Lancashire DuraFlag and Lancashire Old DuraFlag are the heavy-grade flags with rope and toggle for a pole that flies the rose all year. For the county town there is the Preston, Lancashire DuraFlag. If you have no pole, a telescopic flag pole goes up in the garden in minutes, and the wall flag pole and bracket suits the front of a house or a pub. Not sure which size? See the flag size guide.

Lancashire bunting

Lancashire bunting carries the red rose on gold on every pennant, in 3m and 9m lengths, and Lancashire Old bunting does the same with the rose on white. A 3m length dresses a doorway or a shop counter, 9m runs along a hall or a classroom, and two or three 9m lengths tied together cover a street. The Lancashire giant bunting has oversized pennants on an 18.25m length for a market square, a high street or a shopfront.

Hand flags, table flags and windsock

Lancashire hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, with a rose-on-white hand flag too, and are the ones for school assemblies, parades and the town crier’s crowd. For the Lancashire Day lunch, the council chamber or the reception desk, the Lancashire table flag comes with a base, alongside the Old version, a wooden table flag, a large wooden table flag and a satin table flag on a chrome base. The Lancashire windsock suits a garden, a caravan or an allotment.

For the county’s regiment, we stock the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment flag and DuraFlag, and the Queens Lancaster Regiment DuraFlag. Neighbouring counties are in British county flags.
