The Lancashire flag: the red rose on gold

The Lancashire flag is the Red Rose of Lancaster, a five-petalled heraldic rose with gold seeds and green sepals, on a gold field. The rose has been the badge of the county since the House of Lancaster carried it against the white rose of York in the fifteenth century, and for most of the twentieth century it was shown on a white field. When the Friends of Real Lancashire applied to register that red-on-white design with the Flag Institute in 2008 it turned out an identical flag was already on the register for the Scottish burgh of Montrose, so the field was changed to gold and the red rose on gold was registered as the county flag on 29 July 2008. That registered design is our Lancashire flag; the Lancashire Old flag is the traditional rose-on-white that many towns, pubs and cricket clubs still prefer and that most people picture when they think of the Wars of the Roses.

Lancashire Day, 27 November

Lancashire Day is 27 November, the date in 1295 when the county sent its first representatives to Edward I’s Model Parliament, and it has been celebrated since 1996 with the Lancashire Day proclamation read out by town criers from Lancaster Castle to the market squares of Clitheroe, Ormskirk and Garstang, red roses in buttonholes and the flag on every civic pole. The county’s own calendar then runs through the Roses matches at Old Trafford and Headingley, the Super League derbies between Wigan, St Helens, Warrington and Leigh, Preston Guild once every twenty years, the Royal Lancashire Show, Blackpool Illuminations, the Morecambe seafront, the Lancaster and Garstang agricultural shows, Whit walks and the clog-dancing and brass-band weekends that have never gone out of fashion. Yorkshire, Cheshire, Cumberland and the rest are under county flags.

Preston and the clubs of the red rose

The Preston, Lancashire DuraFlag is a heavy-grade flag for the county town, the one for a pole outside a club, a church or a Guild-year display that will stay up through a Pennine winter. The county flag is also the backdrop to the red rose of Lancashire County Cricket Club, Lancashire RFU and the regimental and civic roses carried across the north-west, which is why a run of rose bunting works just as well outside a cricket pavilion as it does at a Lancashire Day lunch.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Lancashire flag is stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole or a car, 3ft x 2ft for a shop window or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a town hall, a cricket ground or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print for Lancashire Day, the Roses match and the show season; Flagtex Nylon is the lighter cloth that flies on a still day; DuraFlag is the heavy knitted grade with double-stitched hems for the pole that flies the rose every day. Eyelets are fitted as standard, with a rope and toggle option on the DuraFlag for a halyard.

Lancashire bunting

Lancashire bunting carries the red rose on gold on every rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m lengths, with a giant 18.25m length of oversized pennants for a high street, a market square or a show marquee. The Lancashire Old bunting in 3m and 9m gives you the rose-on-white for a cricket club or a Wars of the Roses weekend. A 3m length dresses a pub doorway or a bakery counter, 9m runs a hall or a classroom, and two or three lengths tied end to end cover a street for the 27th.

Hand flags, table flags and windsock

Lancashire hand flags on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in are the parade and the Old Trafford flags, with a rose-on-white hand flag for the traditionalists. The Lancashire table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a council chamber, a pub bar or a Lancashire Day dinner, with the Old version alongside, and the satin table flag on a chrome base is the smart one for an office reception. The Lancashire windsock is for the caravan, the campsite and the allotment.

Lancashire flag FAQs

What is the Lancashire flag?

A red heraldic rose with gold seeds and green sepals on a gold field, registered with the Flag Institute on 29 July 2008. The rose is the ancient badge of the House of Lancaster and of the county.

Why is the Lancashire flag gold and not white?

The traditional red rose on white could not be registered in 2008 because an identical flag was already registered to the burgh of Montrose, so the Friends of Real Lancashire chose a gold field instead. We stock the rose-on-white as the Lancashire Old flag for anyone who prefers it.

When is Lancashire Day?

27 November, the anniversary of Lancashire sending its first members to the Model Parliament of 1295. Town criers read the Lancashire Day proclamation and the flag is flown on civic buildings across the historic county.

Which towns count as Lancashire for the flag?

The historic county, which runs from the Furness peninsula and Lancaster down through Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan and Bolton to Manchester, Salford, Liverpool and Warrington. The flag is flown throughout that area, not just inside the modern council boundary.

What size Lancashire flag for a cricket club pole?

5ft x 3ft in DuraFlag on a pole up to 6m, and 8ft x 5ft on a taller fixed pavilion pole. Flagtex is fine for match days only; DuraFlag is the one that stays up all season.

Do you sell Lancashire bunting for a street?

Yes: 3m and 9m lengths in the registered gold design and the rose-on-white, plus a giant 18.25m length with oversized pennants for a market square or a high street.
