Monmouthshire Flags – Fleur-de-lis Flag, Bunting & Table Flags

The Monmouthshire flag: fleurs-de-lis on blue and black

The Monmouthshire flag is divided down the middle, blue at the hoist and black at the fly, with three gold fleurs-de-lis set two and one across the join. The arms are those attributed to Inigo ap Gwaethfoed, the eleventh-century lord of Gwent, and they were adopted by the county as its arms. The blue and black halves and the lilies were registered with the Flag Institute as the county flag in 2011 and now fly from County Hall at Usk, from Shire Hall in Monmouth and from castles at Chepstow, Raglan and Abergavenny. Our Monmouthshire flag is that registered design in both grades.

St David’s Day and the Monmouthshire year

The fleurs-de-lis fly beside the Red Dragon on St David’s Day, 1 March, on schools, town halls and pubs from Monmouth to Magor. Through the year the flag goes up for the Monmouthshire Show in August and the Usk Show in September, the Abergavenny Food Festival, Chepstow Races and the Welsh Grand National, the Monmouth regatta and the Wye at Symonds Yat, Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle and the Three Castles, the Abergavenny Eisteddfod, the Caldicot Castle events, Newport County at Rodney Parade and the Dragons, the Big Pit and the Blaenavon ironworks on the county’s western edge, the Severn bridges, the Usk and Monmouth carnivals, and on garden poles in the villages of the Vale of Usk for royal occasions. The historic county runs to the Rhymney, so Newport, Caerphilly’s eastern side and Ebbw Vale fly it too. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Monmouthshire flags are stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat on the Wye or a short mast, and 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a castle gatehouse. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show day or the 1st of March; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade, hemmed and double stitched, for a Black Mountains or Severnside pole that flies the lilies through a Welsh winter. Eyelets are fitted to both, and the DuraFlag is also available with rope and toggle to suit a halyard. Larger sizes are not held in the standard range for this county.

Monmouthshire bunting

Monmouthshire bunting repeats the fleurs-de-lis on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a market stall or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a rugby clubhouse or a show marquee, and several strings joined end to end will cross Monnow Street or Usk’s Twyn Square for the carnival.

Hand flags and table flags

Monmouthshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Chepstow crowd. On the desk there is the Monmouthshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayoral dinner or a reception. Glamorgan, Brecknockshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire are under county flags.
