The Gloucestershire flag: the Severn Cross

The Gloucestershire flag is known as the Severn Cross: a gold cross edged in white on a field of green and blue, the green for the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean, the blue for the Severn that divides them, and the gold and white cross for the county’s abbeys and cathedral. It was chosen in a public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2008, and it is the flag over Shire Hall in Gloucester and the Municipal Offices in Cheltenham. That registered design is our Gloucestershire flag; the Gloucestershire Old flag is the earlier arms-based design flown before 2008, stocked as a 5ft x 3ft for anyone matching an existing pole.

Where the Severn Cross flies

The flag is out for the Cheltenham Festival in March, the Badminton Horse Trials in May, the cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill on the spring bank holiday, the Cotswold Olimpicks at Chipping Campden, the Royal Three Counties Show, the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, the Cheltenham jazz, music and literature festivals, Gloucester Tall Ships at the docks, the Frampton and Moreton shows, Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm, Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road and Forest Green at the New Lawn. Civic poles in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Tewkesbury and Cinderford fly it through the year, and the historic county reaches across the Avon into Bristol, where the cross is flown as well. Sizes, grades and fittings

The Gloucestershire flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a rugby ground, a council building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for race week, the show and the festival season; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a pole on a Cotswold ridge or beside the estuary that flies the cross all year. The two grades both carry eyelets, with a rope-and-toggle option on the DuraFlag for a halyard pole.

Gloucestershire bunting

Gloucestershire bunting repeats the Severn Cross on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop door or a classroom display, nine metres runs along a village hall or a cricket pavilion, and a few lengths joined end to end cross a market place for the festival or the show.

Hand flags and table flags

Gloucestershire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for Kingsholm, the Tall Ships and a school parade. For the desk there is the Gloucestershire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a club dinner or a reception, with the Old pattern table flag alongside. Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and Oxfordshire are under county flags.
