The Birmingham flag: the bull and the zigzag

The Birmingham flag has a vertical band at the hoist divided by a zigzag line into blue and gold, and a red field carrying a gold bull’s head facing out. The blue and gold indented pattern comes from the arms of the de Bermingham family, the medieval lords of the manor whose name the city still carries, and the bull is the Bull Ring, the market that has stood at the heart of the town since the twelfth century. Our Birmingham flag shows that design in Flagtex and DuraFlag.

Where the bull flies

Villa Park, St Andrew’s and Edgbaston on a big day, the St Patrick’s Day parade through Digbeth, Pride in the Gay Village, the Jewellery Quarter and Brindleyplace, the canal towpaths at Gas Street Basin, office windows on Colmore Row, students’ rooms in Selly Oak, Brummie pubs abroad, and garden poles from Kings Heath to Erdington when the city has something to celebrate. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Flagtex Birmingham flag is 5ft x 3ft at £7.99, printed woven polyester with brass eyelets for a house pole, a wall or a window. The DuraFlag is knitted polyester with double-stitched, reinforced hems and a rope and toggle, in 20x12in at £14.99 for a car, a boat or a desk pole and in 5ft x 3ft at £39.99 for a pole that flies every day. There is no 3ft x 2ft or 8ft x 5ft Birmingham flag at present.

Birmingham bunting and hand flags

Birmingham bunting puts the bull’s head on every rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m strings, enough to dress a shop front, a works canteen or a terrace for the street party. Birmingham hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks at £5.99 for schools, parades and civic visits.

Birmingham table flags

The Birmingham wooden table flag is 9x6in on a wooden pole and base from £2.99, and the Birmingham satin table flag is a sleeved 9x6in flag from £5.00 for a boardroom, a council chamber or a conference stand. Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands counties are under county and regional flags.

Birmingham flag FAQs

What is on the Birmingham flag?

A gold bull’s head on red, with a band of blue and gold divided by a zigzag line along the hoist side.

Why is there a bull on the Birmingham flag?

It stands for the Bull Ring, the market place at the centre of Birmingham since medieval times and still its best-known shopping district.

Where does the blue and gold zigzag come from?

From the arms of the de Bermingham lords of the manor, which were split by an indented line into blue and gold; the city’s own coat of arms uses the same pattern.

Which Birmingham flag for a daily flagpole?

The 5ft x 3ft DuraFlag with rope and toggle. The Flagtex flag is lighter and better kept for match days, events and indoor display.

Is there Birmingham bunting?

Yes, rectangular Birmingham bunting in 3m and 9m lengths with the bull’s head on each flag.

How soon will a Birmingham flag arrive?

The Birmingham range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, forty miles up the road; orders placed before 2pm go out the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
