The Oxfordshire flag: the ox at the ford

The Oxfordshire flag shows an ox crossing a ford, the rebus that has stood for Oxford since the city’s medieval seal and the pun from which the county takes its name, with wavy bars for the Thames and the Cherwell that meet beneath the city. The ox and ford have been used on the arms of both the city and the county council for centuries, and the county flag was registered with the Flag Institute in 2017. That registered design is our Oxfordshire flag; the Oxfordshire Old flag is the earlier arms-based version that was flown before registration, and it carries the full bunting, hand-flag and table-flag range for anyone matching an older display.

Where it flies

The ox is out at dawn on May Morning for the choir on Magdalen Tower, on the Isis for Eights Week and Torpids, at the Thame Show in September, the Blenheim Palace horse trials, Banbury Canal Day, Witney Feast, the Cowley Road Carnival, the Oxfordshire Artweeks trail, the Bampton and Abingdon traditional Morris days and at the Kassam for Oxford United. Civic poles in Oxford, Banbury, Bicester, Witney, Henley and Chipping Norton fly it through the year, Cotswold villages hang the bunting for the fete and the hand flags come out for school sports days and the county’s youth games. Sizes, grades and fittings

The registered flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a punt or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a college, a council building or a tall fixed pole, with the Old flag in 20x12in, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for the show and the regatta season; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with strengthened hems for a pole that flies the ox all year on an exposed Cotswold ridge or beside the river. Each grade has eyelets fitted; the DuraFlag is also available with rope and toggle for a halyard.

Oxfordshire bunting

Oxfordshire bunting carries the ox and ford on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length dresses a college stall or a shop door, 9m runs along a village hall or a boathouse balcony, and a few lengths joined end to end cross a market square for the feast or the carnival.

Hand flags and table flags

Oxfordshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the river bank, the carnival and the parade. For the desk there is the Oxfordshire table flag with base at 6x4in in the registered design, the Old pattern table flag, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a college dinner or a hotel reception, also in the Old design. Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire are under county flags.
