The Herefordshire flag: the bull and the Wye
The Herefordshire flag is a red field with the white face of a Hereford bull in the upper half and three wavy stripes of white, blue and white across the lower half for the River Wye. The red is the colour of the county’s soil and of its famous breed of cattle, whose white face is recognised in farming country around the world; the Wye winds through Hereford, Ross and Hay and is the thread that holds the county together. The design was chosen by public vote in a competition run with the Hereford Times and registered with the Flag Institute in 2019, and it flies from Shirehall and the cathedral close. That registered design is our Herefordshire flag; the Herefordshire Old flag is the earlier council-style banner, blue over red with the wavy Wye and a shield bearing a Norman lion and the bull’s head, stocked in the same sizes for anyone matching an existing pole.
Where the bull flies
The flag goes up for the Three Counties Show at Malvern and the Royal Welsh at Builth across the border, for the Hereford cider and food festivals, the Ledbury poetry festival, the Ross-on-Wye and Bromyard galas, the Kington and Leominster shows, Hereford FC at Edgar Street, the cathedral’s Mappa Mundi and chained library, Goodrich and Croft castles, the Black and White village trail and the Malvern Hills walking weekends. Orchard country turns out the flag for wassails in January and blossom weekends in May, and it sits on garden poles from the Golden Valley to the Wye gorge for St George’s Day, jubilees and coronations. Sizes, grades and fittings
Both the registered and the Old flag are held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a desk or a car, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a showground, a school or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show or a festival weekend; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a farm pole that flies the bull through a wet Marches winter. Both are finished with eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with rope and toggle for a halyard.
Herefordshire bunting
Herefordshire bunting carries the heraldic Old design on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a farm shop, a bar or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a cider tent or a pavilion, and lengths joined together will cross a street in Ledbury or Leominster for a festival.
Hand flags and table flags
Herefordshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks in the Old design for a carnival, a school or the Edgar Street crowd. On the desk there is the Herefordshire table flag with base at 6x4in in the registered bull design, the Old pattern table flag in the same size, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber or a dinner.
