The Surrey flag: blue and gold chequers

The Surrey flag is a field of blue and gold chequers, the arms of the de Warenne family who were Earls of Surrey from the Norman Conquest and whose chequy shield has been used for the county on seals, badges and the county council’s own arms ever since. The chequered flag was registered with the Flag Institute in 2014, and it is the one flown from Guildford Guildhall to the cricket at the Oval. That registered pattern is our Surrey flag; the Surrey Old flag is the earlier version flown around the county before the registered design was fixed, and it remains in stock for anyone matching a flag that is already on the pole.

Where the chequers fly

The blue and gold turns up at the Surrey County Show on the bank holiday at Stoke Park in Guildford, on Epsom Downs for Derby week, at the Oval for a Surrey championship match, along the towpath for the Walton and Molesey regattas, at the Cranleigh and Edenbridge shows and at Surrey Day events, and the historic county still takes in Croydon, Kingston, Richmond and Wimbledon, so there are as many Surrey poles inside the M25 as beyond it. Village fetes from Shere to Lingfield fly it over the tea tent, and schools use the hand flags for the county round of the Olympics in the summer term. The events calendar has the civic dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Surrey flag is stocked in four sizes: 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for the garden pole, the pub and the float, and 8ft x 5ft for a county hall, a cricket ground or a tall fixed pole. The Flagtex grade is a printed woven polyester for shows, matches and short seasonal displays; the DuraFlag grade is a heavier knitted polyester with strengthened hems and stitching for the pole that flies the chequers all year. Eyelets are standard on both, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with rope and toggle for a halyard.

Surrey bunting

Surrey bunting carries the chequered design on each rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m lengths, and the Surrey Old bunting comes in the same two lengths with the earlier pattern. A 3m run suits a pub doorway or a stall, 9m covers a cricket pavilion or a school hall, and several lengths joined end to end dress a village street for the show weekend.

Hand flags and table flags

Surrey hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the Oval terraces, the Derby or a school parade, with the Old pattern alongside. For the desk there is the Surrey table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a club dinner or a reception desk, each also in the Old design. Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Middlesex are under county flags.
