The Pembrokeshire flag: the cross and the Tudor rose
The Pembrokeshire flag is a gold cross on a blue field with a Tudor rose, quartered red and white, set in a green-edged shield at the centre. The gold cross on blue is the ancient banner of St David, whose cathedral stands in the far west of the county and whose feast on 1 March is the biggest day of the Welsh year; the Tudor rose is for Henry Tudor, born in Pembroke Castle in 1457, who landed at Mill Bay on the Milford Haven shore in 1485 on his way to Bosworth and the throne; and the green is the county’s coast and farmland. The design is the banner of Pembrokeshire County Council and is the flag flown from County Hall in Haverfordwest, on the castles and along the harbours. Our Pembrokeshire flag is that design, held in the full size range and both grades.
Where the flag flies
The flag goes up for St David’s Day on 1 March, when the cathedral city and every school in the county fly it beside the red dragon, for the Pembrokeshire County Show at Withybush in August, the Fishguard and Tenby carnivals, the Narberth food festival, the Saundersfoot New Year’s Day swim, the Ironman at Tenby in September, the Fishguard Folk Festival, the Pembroke and Manorbier castle weekends and the Milford Haven and Neyland regattas. It flies on harbour walls, caravan parks and holiday cottages along the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, on the boats out to Skomer and Ramsey, and on garden poles from Crymych to Angle for rugby internationals and Welsh national days. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a caravan, and 8ft x 5ft for the showground, a castle or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show, a carnival or St David’s Day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a coastal pole that takes the Atlantic wind all year. Both come eyeleted, and a rope and toggle finish is available on the DuraFlag for a boat or halyard pole.
Pembrokeshire bunting
Pembrokeshire bunting repeats the cross and rose on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop, a bar or a classroom, nine metres runs along a harbour kiosk, a village hall or a pavilion, and several lengths tied together will cross Tenby high street or Fishguard square for a carnival.
Hand flags and table flags
Pembrokeshire hand flags come in 9x6in and a larger 18x12in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school eisteddfod or the showground. On the desk there is the Pembrokeshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a town hall or a dinner. Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Glamorgan and the Welsh dragon are under county and regional flags.
