The Cheshire flag: three wheatsheaves and a sword

The Cheshire flag is a blue field with three gold wheatsheaves, two above and one below, and a gold sword point downward between the upper pair. The wheatsheaves, garbs in heraldry, have stood for Cheshire since the earls of Chester bore them in the thirteenth century, and the sword is the sword of state carried before the earl as ruler of the palatine county. The same three sheaves sit on the arms of Cheshire County Council and its successor authorities, on Chester’s civic badge and on the shirts of the county cricket side. The banner was registered with the Flag Institute as the county flag in 2013 and is flown at Chester, Crewe, Macclesfield and Northwich, and our Cheshire flag is that registered design in every size we stock.

Where the wheatsheaves fly

The flag goes up for the Royal Cheshire Show at Tabley in June, the Nantwich Show and the international cheese awards in July, Chester Races on the Roodee from May, Knutsford Royal May Day, the Chester Midsummer Watch parade, Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road, Macclesfield and Warrington Town, Cheshire cricket, the Cheshire Steam Fair at Daresbury, the Bollington Festival, the Wirral Show, the canals at Ellesmere Port and the Anderton boat lift, Tatton Park and the RHS show there, Beeston Castle and Lyme Park, and on garden poles from Wilmslow to Whitchurch for jubilees and coronations. The historic county includes the Wirral, Stockport, Altrincham and Birkenhead, so the sheaves fly there too. The events calendar keeps the list.

Sizes, grades and fittings

We hold Cheshire flags in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a narrowboat or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a farm gate, and 8ft x 5ft for a showground, a racecourse or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show weekend or a race day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade, hemmed and double stitched, for a Cheshire Plain pole that catches the wind off the Irish Sea through the winter. Eyelets come on both, and the DuraFlag is also available with rope and toggle for a halyard.

Cheshire bunting

Cheshire bunting repeats the sheaves and sword on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres is right for a bar, a cheese stall or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a marquee or a canal-side pub, and a few lengths tied together will span a market square in Nantwich or Sandbach for the show.

Hand flags and table flags

Cheshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Roodee crowd. On the desk there is the Cheshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayoral dinner or a reception. Lancashire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire are under county flags.
